How to Choose the Right Tibetan Singing Bowl
To choose the right Tibetan singing bowl, you should consider several criteria, including the material it is made from, its size, the musical note it produces, and its intended purpose. To help you make your choice, we will examine each of these criteria in turn:
- Material: There are primarily two types: traditional metal and the much more recent quartz crystal. Crystal bowls are generally referred to as singing bowls because, although the influence of metal Tibetan bowls is clearly visible, their manufacturing methods are very different. Tibetan metal alloy bowls are either hammered or cast using ancient techniques passed down from one generation of artisans to the next. These models produce deep, diffuse vibrations. Quartz crystal singing bowls or rock crystal bowls, on the other hand, are produced entirely through industrial processes because quartz powder must be heated in extremely high-temperature furnaces. Compared with metal bowls, they offer great tonal precision, allowing you to choose the musical note and frequency the bowl will produce when struck or rubbed. Therefore, they are generally recommended for energy work and chakra balancing.
- Size: The size of a Tibetan singing bowl has a significant influence on the sounds the instrument produces. Smaller bowls produce higher-pitched notes, while larger models tend to produce lower notes. Resonance and vibrations are also amplified with larger bowls. In contrast, smaller Tibetan bowls are lighter and easier to carry, making them convenient to take anywhere.
- The musical note produced: Most Tibetan singing bowls made from metal alloys are not tuned to a specific note. However, some metal bowls and all quartz crystal singing bowls are. According to Hinduism, each musical note is directly linked to one of the major chakras in the human body. Therefore, if you want to target a specific chakra, you need to select the corresponding note. Similarly, frequencies of 440, 432, and 528 Hz may also interest you, depending on the purported benefits attributed to them.
- Specialisation: It can be worthwhile to consider bowls designed for a specific purpose, such as crystal healing, meditation, Reiki, or Full Moon Tibetan bowls, which are crafted during full moon nights to be imbued with lunar energy. The appearance of the Tibetan singing bowl is another important consideration. Some instruments are engraved with traditional Tibetan symbols, designs, and script, which may encourage you to use your bowl more often by creating an intimate connection between you and the instrument.

What is a Tibetan singing bowl?

The Tibetan singing bowl is a percussion instrument that usually takes the form of an inverted bell or, more simply, a classic kitchen bowl shape.
Traditionally, singing bowls are crafted from an alloy of seven metals—gold, silver, tin, copper, iron, lead, and mercury—each linked to one of the seven major chakras in Hindu tradition. More recently, quartz crystal bowls have emerged, as they allow for more precise tones to be achieved during manufacturing compared to metal bowls.
Using a mallet or striker—a simple stick wrapped with felt or leather—the player of this Asian musical instrument strikes or rubs the outer wall of the Tibetan bowl. The metal then vibrates, resonates, and produces rich, complex tones that vary depending on the diameter, weight, and material of the instrument. That’s why professionals who use Tibetan singing bowls often own several models in different sizes.
Usually, the percussionist does not play the Tibetan bowl directly on the ground. The instrument rests either in the musician’s open hand or on a ring-shaped or rectangular cushion that helps the vibrations spread properly.
What sounds does a singing bowl produce?
The size and composition of the bowl determine its voice. Smaller instruments produce higher tones, while larger singing bowls emit deeper, more resonant sounds.
