artisanal tannery
As the holder of Tuscany's ancestral expertise in vegetable-tanning leather, the Virgilio tannery is committed to preserving traditions in accordance with the highest standards.
Prioritizing the nobility of the leather's patina, the tannery applies virtually no resin to its leathers. The feel is purely natural, as is the aging of the leather. These characteristics give the leather its inimitable character.
The tannery has also developed an eco-friendly vegetable-tanning process that is particularly slow, allowing natural pigments to penetrate deep into the hide. The resulting leathers thus display vibrant colors throughout their entire thickness.

eco-friendly approach
There are two types of tanning: mineral tanning (using chromium) and vegetable tanning (using plant-based tannins derived from trees). The former can be toxic when not regulated by European standards, while the latter requires large quantities of water.
Committed to preserving the natural and cultural environment, the tannery has implemented an optimal tanning wastewater management system. Tanning wastewater is reused in several baths until the tannins are exhausted.
The tannery holds several environmental labels, the most important of which is the Leather Working Group label.

Full-grain calfskin
The tannery specializes in working with calfskins from French, Swiss, and Norwegian farms. More specifically, it tans the neck area, known as the throat.
Usually, this part of the animal hide is chosen to make belts because of its high collagen content.

La Tannerie Haas
Specializing in mineral-tanned pigmented calfskin, the Haas tannery is responsible for several very well-known leather grains: the "caviar" grain, the "epsum" grain, etc. These leather finishes are commonly found in the luxury industry.
Owned by Chanel for several years, the tannery has stocks that it sells to wholesalers, who in turn resell them to artisans. These are stocks that have "defects" or do not meet their customers' specifications.
What the luxury industry houses qualify as leather defects include scratches, wrinkles, and beauty marks, for example. These are traces of life from living beings that we find interesting at Faméthic because they characterize the authenticity of genuine full-grain leather.

Remy Carriat Tannery
Based in Espelette in the Basque Country, Rémy Carriat remains one of the only independent tanneries in France.
Specializing in buffalo leathers from France and Pakistan, the French tannery is renowned for the quality of its nubuck finishes.
It has developed unique expertise in waterproofed, velvet-touch full-grain leathers.
Buffalo leather is particularly strong and resistant to abrasion.
