“Full-grain” leather is animal hide whose epidermis has been thoroughly cleaned but not completely removed, as is done with “corrected-grain” leather.

For this second tanning finish, the tanner removes the epidermis to eliminate all traces of the animal’s life considered “flaws”: wrinkles, moles, stretch marks, scars, irregular hair growth, etc. The leather is then either left as is, in which case it is called “suede” or “split leather,” which corresponds to the part of the skin known as the dermis. This porous and more delicate layer requires more care and precaution, conditions of use that may not suit everyone’s lifestyle. The tanner may also apply a layer of synthetic resin and colored pigments to the dermis, giving the leather a plasticized or even varnished appearance. This corrected finish does not allow the leather to develop a patina; rather, the quality of the petrochemical resins will determine the lifespan of your leather item.

With full-grain leather, you enjoy all the natural characteristics of a hide that give leather its nobility, as well as a beautiful, lasting patina that will protect and enhance your leather item.

For small leather goods, two important factors should be taken into account: friction on the leather due to regular handling of the item, and the transfer of natural oils from our hands onto the leather. Both of these will naturally nourish and patina your leather.

I recommend doing the following:
- an initial, light treatment with our leather care balm before you start using your leather item intensively.
- cleaning the leather, followed by waxing, every two or three years, by following our leather care tips.

More often than not, it is the loss or theft of your wallet that will bring its life to an end. Unfortunately, the more a wallet develops a patina and the more beautiful it becomes, the greater the risk of theft.
